Internship
For my AMES internship I used FRC Robotics. FRC's mission is to give students experiences in a wide array of possible career choices before they are in college. This can be engineering by being involved with the actual construction of the robot or it may be business or social sciences with fundraising and team outreach. My mentor was Sarah Whitbeck, she helped coach me through the 2015 FRC robotics season as well as the entire team. I enjoyed my experience in robotics and it has helped me decide on majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
The challenge for the 2015 FRC season was called Recycle Rush. This game involved stacking gray totes on scoring platforms up to six high, a green bin is able to be put on the top at this time with an optional pool noodle in the top hole if the robot can manage it. There are three robots on each team and they must work together to get as many points as possible. This season we welded a frame out of steel bar and had it powder coated bright red. Our mechanism for picking up totes was a pair of arms that opened and closed with two pneumatic cylinders, which was on a winch system to lift the arms and any totes up to six feet in the air.
